Season 9

This article features episode summaries from the ninth season of Beavis and Butt-Head. It was released on August 4, 2022 ^[1] This season consists of 23 episodes paired into 12 half-hours.^[2] This is the first season to have a new arrangement of the original theme song.

Production[]

Season 8 finished off with "Going Down" on December 29, 2011, and no new episodes of the 2011 revival aired since. An anonymous source had announced that the show was renewed for thirty more episodes on July 7, 2010, then MTV confirmed the announcement on July 14, 2010, and twenty-two of the episodes have aired, with eight from the order remaining. The rest of the ordered episodes were never aired and likely never produced.

On July 1, 2020, it was announced that Comedy Central has ordered a second revival of the series consisting of two new seasons along with spin-offs and specials. In the new series, Beavis and Butt-Head will enter a "whole new Gen Z world" with meta-themes that are said to be relatable to both new fans who may be unfamiliar with the original series and old. Mike Judge will return as the writer, producer and voice actor for the series.

Beavis and Butt-head Do the Universe was released on June 23, 2022, and serves as a "pilot" to this new series, which focuses on the duo's escapades in the 2020s. Some episodes focus on their middle-aged versions from said movie, with Smart Beavis and Smart Butt-Head introducing these episodes.

This is the first season to premiere on Paramount+. It was originally going to premiere on Comedy Central, which ran reruns of the original series in November 2005 as promotion for the Mike Judge Collection Volume 1, again in December 2012 as part of a marathon, and again in June and August 2022 as promotion of Do The Universe and Season 9. From February 8, 2023 to March 15, 2023, Comedy Central had been premiering and rerunning Season 9 episodes as a part of their regular programming with episodes premiering on Wednesday nights at 10:30pm ET but reruns usually airing whenever but usually in the early hours, occasionally in the afternoon, and in the evening to late night. The last time Season 9 was regularly airing was on March 19, 2023 from 1:10am to 3:25am before the month long hiatus. But on April 20, 2023, Comedy Central premiered the last seven episodes along with rerunning all the other Season 9 episodes.
Starting with this season, the duo not only criticize music videos, but also TikToks and YouTube videos.
- The theme song has also been re-recorded, and picture frames were added around the duo in the title card. The episode title cards have also been updated, with a completely new style of backgrounds and script/style for the title of episodes, and they change episode to episode, backgrounds included.
Some side characters from the original series return, such as Van Driessen, Tom Anderson, and Stewart, albeit aged up.
There will be an episode where the duo are on jury duty.^[5] (timestamp: 18:54)
During an interview with TVInsider, Mike Judge revealed a couple of episode plots, such as the aforementioned jury duty one, which will be with the middle-aged versions of the duo, and one where Van Driessen teaches them meditation, which they are surprisingly good at, and end up meeting the Buddha.^[6]
- The Buddha episode was later revealed to be season 10's premiere, "Meditation Sucks."
The duo will critique videos from Tyler, The Creator, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Cale Dodds, and CNCO, among others.^[2]
- During the BTS review, Beavis reveals himself to be a fan of BTS, to Butt-Head's disgust, much like he has for Bon Jovi and Katy Perry in past seasons.
During an interview with the New York Post, Mike Judge mentioned an episode where the school psychiatrist prescribes Butt-Head with an unclassified kind of medication for his aggressive behavior, altering his personality to a nicer one, upsetting Beavis and ruining their friendship. This episode was later revealed to be "Nice Butt-Head".^[7]
During an interview with Decider, Mike Judge revealed some more episode plots with the old duo, including the jury duty one, one where Old Beavis needs a kidney donor, with a middle-aged Stewart making an appearance, one where they get vasectomies, and one where they accidentally somehow get married.^[8] The first two were revealed to be "Two Stupid Men" and "Kidney", with the others being revealed as Season 10's "Married" and "Vasectomies".
